A perennially popular subject on video (judging by the increasing number of videos released every year), child safety is addressed in two new programs. The two-volume Infant & Toddler Emergency First Aid series leads off strong in Accidents. Handsomely produced, the program opens with good general information on childproofing the home, explains how emergency medical service teams work, and lists the necessary components of a home first-aid kit, before tackling specific topics. Symptoms, treatment, and emergency recommendations are given for over a dozen categories, including head injuries, bee stings, sunburn, electrical shock, cuts, burns, and shock. Opening with general remarks similar to those found on the first volume, the second tape, Illnesses, covers poisoning, croup, fever, seizures, choking, rescue breathing, and concludes with in-depth CPR reviews for infants and children. The title of the second tape may prove a little confusing to parents, since illnesses such as colic, chickenpox, measles, mumps, etc. are not covered--but these are not "emergency" illnesses. The pair would make good replacements for older titles like 1992's Child Safety at Home (VL-9/92).Safe Children, co-produced by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and hosted by Canadian television star Jackson Davies, offers guidelines and suggestions for bicycle safety, car safety, water and boat safety, preventing child abuse, and dealing with strangers. Originally shown on television (there are several "coming up next..." bits), Safe Children boasts top-notch production values, and sound advice for parents. However, numerous references to "Canada's children," Canadian crime statistics, and the Canadian "Block Parent" program make this title most suitable for Canadian audiences. Both volumes of the Infant & Toddler Emergency First Aid series are highly recommended. Safe Children is highly recommended for Canadian public libraries. (R. Pitman)
