Antiques appraiser Frank Farmer Loomis IV is the amiable host for this introduction to collecting antiques. Beginning by explaining the various definitions of antiques (classic: items made prior to 1920; U.S.: items at least 100 years old; and Loomis' own preferred definition: anything made before 1910), Loomis first directs viewers to their local library where they can read more about the particular area of antiques they wish to collect in. In a section entitled "Eternal Stars," he shows viewers the perennial favorites of antique collecting (corner cupboards, depression glass, candlesticks, blue & white porcelain, etc.). He also talks about the 6 major woods (mahogany, cherry, walnut, maple, pine, and oak) and discusses the pluses and minuses of each, as well as providing a demonstration of simple refinishing. Other topics addressed include: terms of the trade, buying and selling techniques, a guide to antique "sleepers," and Loomis's personal 10 best tips. A good program on a very popular subject. (See MATH...WHO NEEDS IT? (under FUTURES 2) for availability.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
