Instructor Deborah Chandler begins with an overview of the essentials of handweaving: showing viewers a variety of handwoven materials, explaining the use of various small tools necessary to the trade, and demonstrating how different looms are used to produce unique woven objects. Throughout, the viewer is slowly indoctrinated into the vocabulary of weavers, so that, during the second half of the program when Chandler begins to focus on measuring the weft and warp yarn for a 6 ft. shawl, the viewer is comfortable with, and able to follow, the extensive terminology. Following the program, viewers are made aware of the numerous books and magazines available on the subject of weaving, and directed to weaver's guilds for more information (curiously, libraries--an obvious source for much of this--are never mentioned). Although the production is low-budget, and the tape quality is only fair, the program is packed with enough solid information to get the would-be-weaver off to a good start. (Other video workshops include: Tapestry Weaving, Card Weaving, Cut Pile Rug Weaving, and Middle Eastern Technique, ranging from $49-$69 each.) Recommended. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
