Based on the manual "Service is an Honorable Profession" by Ed Solomon and Shelley Prueter, this video version falls short of its print inspiration, both in terms of content and presentation. Aimed at professional restaurant servers, the video covers the basics of good service, the importance of knowing your menu, setting up tables, the mechanics of serving and clearing, and tips on selling wine and dessert. The level of detail is not as good as in the book, and the video is constantly interrupted with titled screens carrying such slogans as "Servers Are Sellers!," You Serve Guests Not Customers!," which are usually accompanied by the ubiquitous overuse of the exclamation mark. As in: this program could have been much better! While the program might be fine for a staff training situation at a restaurant, it is not a necessary purchase for public libraries. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
