A superior art project demonstration enriched with historical and scientific information, this presentation introduces students to Greek culture through the tanagra, a terra cotta figure often serving as a small lamp in ancient homes. Carolyn Lebo provides clear instruction in her hands-on project of making an oil lamp: She cuts forms from plastic bowls, rolls out the clay, paints a design and produces a very attractive, functional lamp, complete with wick, followed by a lesson in casting a mold to produce a decorative figure. And just in case anyone is left wondering how the oil finds its way from the basin of the lamp, a science lesson is added to demonstrate how an oil lamp operates. Highly recommended. The other parts in the series are: Jars & Jugs, Marbles! Marbles! & Tiny Treasures and The Perfect Building & All the Trimmings (series price: $179.95). Aud: I, J. (J. Reed)
