Karate tapes abound, but instead of taking the typical straight how-to format, this tape approaches its subject with the historical reverence of a Ken Burns opus. Instead of personal recollections, we "meet" Japanese karate moves and positions, watching how they evolve over the generations. Viewers are treated to the history of Japanese karate from the ancient times of the Samurai through the 1920's (followed by a demonstration of the original moves in normal and slow motion), an overview of karate in the 30's and 40's (with a run-through of the accompanying moves), and a look at modern karate (concluding with contemporary examples). Although I would have liked more fleshed-out explanations concerning the specific routines, this educational and unique entry will help viewers appreciate the "art" in martial arts. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (E. Druda)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
