"Pretend you're a marching band...let's play the trombone!" "Make believe you're an airplane!" Kind of sounds like the level of instruction one would find on a children's video, don't it? Well, just about everyone performing the routines in Jodi Stolove's Chair Dancing is an adult and, frankly, I don't think I've ever seen adults looking more silly in my life. Jodi Stolove is the guiding force behind chair dancing (which is considered to be a "new concept in aerobics fitness"). Although it certainly has the look of an aerobics exercise program (including three levels of chair dancing as demonstrated by the dancers in pink, in blue, and by Stolove herself), the set and the concept are so decidedly weird that you're never sure what's coming next. For me, the final straw was the paper plates: you hold paper plates in your hands while doing your arm exercises. They're not used for weight, they're not used for increasing dexterity, they're just used for...holding. The best shot is of a woman chair dancer who doesn't realize the camera is on her and therefore isn't wearing the infantile grin that adorns the faces of the rest of the dancers...but then she notices the camera...and...smile! A very strange program. Not recommended. (Available from: Instructional Video, Inc., 727 O St., Lincoln, NE 68508; (800) 228-0164; (402) 475-6570.)
