Chuck Sullivan (7th Degree Black Belt) and Vic LeRoux (5th Degree Black Belt) are the instructors for this excellent (with one caveat) tape on karate instruction. First, the caveat: the video quality is only passable. In all other respects, however, Karate Connection is a superb martial arts program, and one of the best we've seen to date. Sullivan and LeRoux teach Karate, Chinese style, Kempo system. In the first part of the program, Sullivan demonstrates stance and foot maneuvers. Viewers who think they're going to be getting heavy-hitting chop-socky will be surprised to find out just how important correct stance and movement are. Sullivan gives a precise and detailed step-by-step demonstration of all of the components of both. The same attention to detail is also seen in the sections on blocking, kicking, and punching. The tape concludes with a demonstration of the test for an Orange Belt, and invites viewers to take the test via video and send in their taped test for certification (if they pass). Sullivan and LeRoux understand the value of the video medium, and are therefore able to offer an opportunity in distance learning previously unavailable to students and martial-arts enthusiasts who had no school for testing in their area. Inexpensive, jam-packed with professional guidance, and stressing the art over the fighting (Sullivan reminds viewers that the techniques learned in karate are never used unless in self-defense), Karate Connection will surely fly off the shelves. Highly recommended. (Available from: Karate Connection, P.O. Box 4067, Seal Beach, CA 90740.)
