Olympic Gold medalist Greg Barton hosts this comprehensive introduction to the sport of kayaking. After a brief introduction, Barton discusses the types of kayaks on the market, explains what the basic parts of a kayak are, offers advice on choosing a paddle, demonstrates how to carry a kayak, gets in and out of the kayak in calm and whitewater conditions, shows the basic paddle stroke (which is broken down into separate components in slow-motion) as well as other strokes and techniques (bracing, sculling, and the draw stroke), instructs viewers in the art of turning the kayak, discusses the differences between river and sea kayaking, and offers rescue and safety tips. Viewers are further recommended to visit their local kayak shop or local library for more information. Kayaking Basics is an excellent program that delivers what it promises--a sound introduction to the basics of kayaking. Excellent video and audio qualities combined with Barton's hands-on instruction make this a very good sporting "how-to." Highly recommended. (See THE COOK ISLANDS for availability.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
