Smarter than your average hip-hop tutorial, this program stands out for its unique split-screen feature which simultaneously shows the instructor demonstrating moves from the back (as if you're standing behind him) as well as from the front in a “mirror image” (i.e., when they say move to your right, they actually mean your right). A Cambridge University alum and professional choreographer, St. Louis-born host Kelly Peters and his KPD Crew of young dancers (ages 11-18) break down the moves into six classic “party dances” and variations (including the Freak, the Izod-influenced Prep, and the Biz Markie—named after the Harlem “Just a Friend” artist), blending the steps into combos with smooth transitions, as well as covering more advanced bonus moves such as the Harlem shake and breakdancing staple “baby freeze.” The instruction is accompanied by a segment on the foundations and elements of hip-hop (although Peters does mention the commercialization and other darker aspects of the business, his mantra that hip hop is about “respect for God” and his referral of viewers to the Zulu Nation are both a little off-base). DVD extras include a “KPD Crew Battle,” and an interview with choreographer duo Nu Stylz, who have worked with Missy Elliott, 50 Cent, and Whitney Houston. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
