This overview of job-seeking in contemporary America is full of up-to-date information and tips about how to succeed in getting hired. Unlike the days when one simply looked at want ads in a newspaper, job-seeking today is a beast with many arms. The program begins with some bleak facts: since the 2008 recession, the vast majority of high school graduates have been unable to find full-time work, and half of college grads are in the same economic boat. That makes the job market ultra-competitive, so it makes sense for young people entering the workforce to know how to effectively sell themselves. Lacking work experience, it's important to talk up qualities (personal discipline, a willingness to learn and work hard) that can make one desirable to a prospective employer (the upside of being inexperienced, a human resources specialist says here, is that a newcomer is a blank slate and can be trained in good habits). In order to save time, it's a wise idea to focus on industries that are of interest to a job-seeker, and part of that narrowing process also includes being aware of what's going on in the community (new industries, a new company, a franchise, etc.). Networking is crucial: family, friends, neighbors—everyone is a potential resource for finding out about a job opening. Finally, websites such as Monster.com can be helpful, although some of the ads on these kinds of sites are really lures to draw the visitor into taking classes for money. An excellent guidance title for job seekers, this is highly recommended. [Note: also newly available at the same price is Keys to Getting Hired for Job Seekers Over 50.] Aud: H, C, P. (T. Keogh)
