This is a good, sturdy package (both conceptually and literally) which takes a specific topic and covers it well. Subtitled in Spanish, the video looks at contemporary artists from three Latino communities in the United States, using interviews, historical narrative, scenes from the studios, and pictures of their work, to examine the total impact of the creations. We hear from the Mexican-American population via painter Carmen Lomas Garcia, 97-year-old weaver Agueda Martinez, and muralist John Valadez. Puerto Rican voices are heard through photographer Joseph Rodriquez and sculptor Pepon Osorio, and Cuban Americans are represented by quilter Maria Castagliola and painter Maria Brito. Along with the accompanying materials, the video would be a good curriculum choice for schools offering classes in Latino society or contemporary arts, as well as larger public libraries. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (E. Druda)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
