This video series of 14 volumes was developed to aid adult math students quickly master and/or reinforce basic math concepts. Using simple principles and examples, each concept is presented by Janet Scarpone, the creator of the series, who teaches on a white board and explains each move clearly. This particular volume deals with the trickiness of word problems, and offers several tips for solving them, such as looking for key "clue" words and patterns. However, none of the example problems are very in-depth or complex--this video is designed for those with basic junior high-level skills (fractions, basic operations, no algebraic functions). For what it proposes to do, this video succeeds--word problems are de-mystified--but for the price, it seems there should be a bit more than just footage of an effective teacher explaining problems on the board. An optional purchase. Other titles in the series include: Fractions: Basics, Decimals, Percent, Ratio and Proportion, and Algebra 1. Aud: H, C, P. (E. Gieschen)
