Kind of like audio-visual Cliffs Notes for high school and college students, the titles in the Standard Deviants collection (which cover a broad range of curriculum subjects) are presented in a modern MTV style with a large cast of young hosts, quick cuts, and more visual sight gags than you can shake a stick at. As hyperkinetic as the presentations are, however, style doesn't trump substance. Learn Public Speaking, which helps viewers to confront one of the greatest fears (ranked higher on some surveys than fear of death) covers both basic and advanced techniques in several areas--easily navigable on DVD--such as suggestions for dealing with anxiety (appropriately enough, these kids recommend solid research and preparation), various speaking strategies, using specific instances and anecdotes to convey key points, overall speech organization, delivery methods, and much more. Although clearly aimed at an upper educational audience, this would also be a boon for public libraries and organizations. In fact, I suspect many people who show up for “open mic night” at city council, planning commission, and school board meetings could benefit from watching this program (and perhaps it should be required viewing for office holders as well!). Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: H, C, P. (C. Block)
