How would you classify "When the Saints Go Marching In"? As jazz, blues, or spiritual? You'd hedge your bets and say "jazzy blues" right? Wrong and wrong. The song actually began as a gospel number. In this two-volume set, gospel pianist/singer Ethel Caffie-Austin shows viewers how to tickle those ivories with spiritual purpose as she guides viewers through a divine, tap-your-feet, jump-outta-your-seat, say-amen version of "Saints" as well as "Standing in the Need of Prayer," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and, on Vol. 2, "Amazing Grace," "Study War No More" and "Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus," among other tunes. Good overhead camerawork and clear, repeated instruction from Caffie-Austin make this a good choice for those pianists who would like to get religion into their music. Not for beginners, the program assumes basic proficiency in reading music and playing the piano. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Pitman)
