Artist Carolyn Berry offers knowledgeable advice and instruction in this program from the televised Learning to Paint series. Berry introduces viewers to some of the basic concepts of drawing, outlines the supplies necessary for drawing, and details the "six different ways of looking at a subject" (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, etc.). She demonstrates techniques for portrait drawing from various angles (full face, 3/4 view, profile), and offers extensive practical advice along the way (reminding viewers that in real life, shoulders aren't square, they slant; and that one should avoid the tendency to turn a "nose nostril into a pig's snout.") The second half of the program is devoted to a hands-on exercise in portrait drawing using a model, and guided by Berry's insightful commentary. Fully assured and comfortable in front of the camera, Berry is a natural instructress who loves her subject matter and enjoys sharing it with viewers. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. [Note: 3 other programs in the series are also available--Portrait Painting (which continues the work begun in Portrait Drawing), Field Flowers, and Still Life, at $49.95 each or $149.95 for all four programs.] (Available from: The Cinema Guild, 1697 Broadway, New York, NY 10019.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
