Doing magic is a time-tested method for having fun, impressing friends, and even making a little money on the side. But how can you learn the tricks? Magicians rightfully go to great lengths to maintain the mystery of their craft, and books and “magic kits” sometimes lose a little something in the translation. While this production may be a little short on technical flash, the tricks themselves--presented by Reid “Magic” Johnson, who has been performing for more than a decade--are plenty impressive. A total of eight popular tricks are demonstrated here, including the classic “cups and balls” illusion in which balls appear to pass through cups, card tricks, and even the ol' “cutting a woman in two” (in this case, a cardboard Barbie doll), using everyday household items. Johnson is a skilled host with enthusiasm for his craft and a good sense of humor (which extends to the packaging, featuring rave review quotes from his mother and nephew). A fun introduction to a perennially popular subject, this is recommended. Aud: E, I, J, P. (C. Block)

This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
