Something bizarre happens when kids hit their teens: suddenly, parents who couldn't get their motor-mouth children to “stifle it” are begging them to talk. While this set of programs won't magically solve all communication problems, Let's Talk does provide some insights and offers solid suggestions on starting conversations. Both titles (series price: $179.95) are geared toward junior and senior high school kids and their parents. Let's Talk #1: A Kid's Take on Talking to Parents features teens discussing situations that make it difficult for them to talk to their parents, as well as various ways in which parents or kids shut down communication. Let's Talk # 2: A Parent's Take on Kids Talking to Parents offers the parents' point of view, while also illustrating mom and dad's tendencies to jump to conclusions, interrupt, and unnecessarily violate their child's privacy (while also underscoring the need for parents to understand that the world has changed radically from when they were teenagers). Both audiences will easily recognize common mistakes in the provided examples, and hopefully come away with ideas for communicating more effectively. Recommended. Aud: J, H, P. (L. Stevens)
