Lynne Wheldon's battle cry "for every pound left behind there's a ton of fun ahead" got my attention right away, since like many other middle-aged hikers, I have enough problems carrying my own extra weight without hauling a 50 lb. pack to boot. Wheldon's method, although somewhat unconventional, allows you to carry supplies for a 5-day hike with a pack weighing 25 pounds or less. Using the Appalachian Trail and other scenic vistas as a backdrop, he introduces a re-designed pack, and helps viewers re-think shelter, sleeping gear, clothing, footwear, food, water, cooking, and other supplies. Viewers will also learn how to make lightweight gear (contact information for commercial suppliers is provided for the inept handyperson), and the program includes interviews with minimalist experts who share their own tips on packing light (and some of these suggestions would be equally applicable when packing for a vacation or business trip). The general idea is not to try to take "home" with you, but only what you will need. Now if Wheldon could just do something about diaper bags… Recommended, as a more detailed alternative to titles such as Basic Backpacking (VL-9/97). Aud: P. (L. Stevens)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
