The series Algebra: (spirations & (pplications responds to the familiar complaint “But what does that have to do with real life?” by not only teaching mathematical concepts but also correlating them to practical uses in authentic situations. Each program is hosted by Dr. Monica Neagoy, a math education professor who guides viewers through algebraic concepts using the TI-(spire™ Texas Instruments graphing calculator. In Logarithms and Logarithmic Functions, Neagoy thoroughly covers logarithmic graphs and functions, log properties, and how to set up logarithmic tables. Although it uses clear definitions, sample problems, and plenty of onscreen graphics, this is not an introductory algebra program; knowledge of math terminology and properties (e.g., exponents, power of x, integer) is assumed. The real-world applications emerge in the areas of earthquake and tsunami measurement (the Richter scale) and hearing loss (decibel curve). Despite the solid content, however, the program's usefulness is somewhat limited without the featured technology of the specified TI calculator. Other titles in this series include Linear Functions, Equations and Graphs; Variables, Equations and Functions: The Foundation of Algebra; and Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability. While definitely recommended for math classrooms that use the TI-(spire, this is optional for others. Aud: J, H, C, P. (E. Gieschen)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
