Mendocino artist Bill Martin is the host for this projected series of six programs (two of which are currently available) teaching both theory and specific painting techniques. Going beyond the simple paint-by-numbers approach, Martin describes in Mendocino Still Life the 5 basic shapes in nature (cone, cylinder, sphere, torus, and cube), and takes viewers on a step-by-step painting of a still life filled with different shapes, textures, and colors (red onion, orange carrot, shiny mug, etc.). The production values are excellent, and the program makes good use of inset pictures to highlight Martin's commentary. The second program, Mendocino Landscape adds further instruction on perspective, reflection, contrasts, and more, while walking viewers through a beautiful landscape painting. Martin is a personable instructor who is able to break down complex notions into easily understood concepts by "showing" rather than simply telling. It should be noted that-- although the programs do stand alone-- there are references to the other tapes in the series (which are not yet available). Highly recommended. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
