Via the mistakes and mishaps of "Silly Steve," the roughly 11-year-old protagonist in this inexpensive tape, we learn how to build a model car "the correct way and [thereby] avoid years of frustration." Topics include organizing, cutting and trimming, gluing, prepping and painting, applying decals, and displaying. I believe that these suggestions and processes would indeed help keep the frustration-level down (who knew how crucial it was to wash your model parts before painting them, for instance?), but I had no idea how dangerous model building could be: between the glue, the knives, the sprue cutters, the caustic drain-clog-removers, the paints and thinners, and the spray cans, we're talking about a veritable starter kit for budding drug addicts and other criminals. The tape does provide plenty of safety warnings, though, and I guess kids have been putting these models together for years mostly without incident, but parents do need to be warned about the potential hazards. What the tape doesn't provide, however, is product objectivity: only Revell-Monogram models are prominently featured here. Still, despite the advertising plug and the danger-factor, this tape is recommended for its step-by-step, easy-to-follow, tightly-filmed approach. Aud: P. (K. Glaser)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
