Even if it's not everyone's idea of "The First City of the World," New York certainly looms large in the consciousness of Americans. This travel video gives a nice overview for would-be tourists, highlighting most of the must-sees. There's a nice balance between the high-brow attractions like museums and medium-brow favorites like the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. On the other hand, the historical narrative could have been stronger and smoother: after the 18th century is discussed, we are propelled forward to the 1880s, skipping the critical years when New York's growth and wealth eclipsed Boston's and Philadelphia's and it took its place as the nation's premier city. Thomas Edison's role in "electrifying" New York is mentioned, but not Elisha Graves Otis, whose elevator brake made multistoried buildings practical on the scale for which the city became famous. Quibbles aside, the video does feature a little bit of ethnic interest, some shopping landmarks, and a medley of classic songs by New Yorkers--what else?--praising themselves. A good buy for most libraries. Recommended. Aud: P. (R. Reagan)
