What's the most essential nutrient that the human body requires? If you said caffeine (with chocolate a close second) you would be absolutely correct. Unfortunately, registered dieticians, including host Liz Weiss, do not agree with popular opinion. The correct answer (if you are in the presence of a medical professional) is water. The hydrogen-oxygen molecular shake, together with carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals comprise the basic tools the body needs to operate. Using person-in-the-street interviews, the program queries folks about nutrition basics and separates some myths from the facts before taking a tour of the Food Guide Pyramid. Here some odd notions are advanced (such as the concept that deciding to go with full-fat or low-fat dairy products is a matter of personal choice, not a health decision--a position that would surely raise the eyebrows of many health professionals). Finally, the program omits any discussion of reading nutrition labels--an obvious cornerstone to any effective trip to the grocery store. Incomplete, with a few weird comments, Nutrition Basics is not recommended. Aud: I, J, H, P. (R. Pitman)
