Combining a very fine interview with a good deal of intelligent advice regarding singing, this excellent instructional video, hosted by Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell, a member of the vocal group Sweet Honey in the Rock, focuses on one of the great treasures of American music: Odetta. In addition to sharing tips and techniques regarding the voice--one of the most difficult musical instruments to teach--Odetta talks about her childhood, classical voice training, and her eventual move to folk music and songwriting. We're also treated to a generous sample of her singing and guitar techniques. Despite the fact that this sort of video tends to be rather static, particularly in the interview segments, Odetta's charismatic presence and openness and Barnwell's informed questions make this highly recommended for any aspiring or practicing vocalist, not to mention music fans in general.
