Artist Tony Couch is the instructor in these two watercolor lessons. Painting Barns in Watercolor is the weaker of the two, in that there is almost no discussion of the tools to be used, nor much at all about style and theory. Couch paints the barn and environs and the viewer does precisely the same. Prior to the actual painting, Couch makes a "value sketch" in which he delineates the areas of light and dark which he intends to paint; oddly this section is more valuable than the actual painting instruction. In Painting Streams, Rocks, and Trees in Watercolor, Couch does another value sketch--but then discusses the brushes and palette colors he will be using for the painting. The instruction in both programs is fairly lackluster, with Couch seeming to talk more to himself (on the order of "a little grey here", "a little brown there") rather than to the audience. There are much better basic watercolor painting videos on the market. This pair is not recommended. (Available from: Crystal Productions, P. O. Box 2159, Glenview, IL 60025.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
