Self-proclaimed "Art Medicine Woman" Aviva Gold lights candles and offers prayers to the Great Spirit while encouraging novice artists to set up a "simple, safe and sacred" space for their creative efforts. Under the layers of "everyday shamanism" there are a few practical, cost-effective suggestions for paint containers, paper, types of paints, etc. Unfortunately, Ms. Gold's low-key approach can be near sleep-inducing (although her heart is in the right place: she sees art as a process to enhance physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, and there's no arguing that point).
