In this fascinating look at a strictly defensive and relatively recent branch of karate, known as Sanchin, which was originated on the island of Okinawa by Chinese boxer Kanbun Uechi early this century, viewers will learn the discipline's history through a wonderfully narrated montage of old film clips and photographs. The techniques are then demonstrated by 8th Dan Shinyu Gushi and two students, who withstand powerful punches, kicks, and whacks with wooden planks on various body parts without flinching. Students and master also break some wooden blocks across their stomachs and shins, in addition to responding to the traditional punch and chop. Their unshakable concentration and strength is truly remarkable. In addition, some general information about breathing techniques and body stances is touched upon here. Volume 2, also priced at $30, continues with Primary Techniques. The two-volume set is strongly recommended for collections where interest in martial arts is high. Aud: P. (E. Druda)
