For what is essentially a talking-heads video, this two-hour plus program is amazingly effective in presenting both an in-depth exploration of the psychological and emotional ramifications for victims of childhood sexual abuse as well as the myriad possibilities for healing available. Psychologist Kate Commerford provides a disturbing overview of frequent characteristics found in the abusive home (lots of secrets, children are taught to not have needs, etc.), while cautioning viewers that there is no such thing as the "typical" abusive family (it cuts across all social and economic strata). Commerford also addresses the wide range of physical and psychological symptoms which often plague victims of childhood sexual abuse during their adult years (chronic pain--often in the reproductive organs, irritable bowel syndrome, sexual dysfunction, problems with body image, etc.). Suggestions on choosing a therapist and a breakdown of the stages of therapy are covered by Toye Honeyman (a counselor) and Kathryn King (a social worker). The second half of the program explores alternative therapies available, including: art therapy, meditation, music therapy, group therapy, massage, etc. Authors Judith Duerk (Circle of Stones) and Wendy Maltz (Incest & Sexuality and The Sexual Healing Journey) are also featured. Pathways to Healing is an excellent program which provides a truly in-depth look at the realities of adult victims of childhood sexual abuse and opens the door to a wide range of pathways that people may take to aid in the healing process. Highly recommended. (Available from: Winters Productions, P.O. Box 29091, Portland, OR 97229; (503) 357-4749.)
