Truth be told, I don't understand the philosophy behind hunting. Host Tom Huggler spends a great deal of time talking about the history of pheasants, statistics concerning their dwindling population in some areas, and his grudging admiration for the birds' cunning, strength and stamina. Then we are treated to shots of them blown away in mid-flight, and dangling bloody from a hound's mouth while the hunter cautions the dog to "keep the beautiful plumage intact." It seems a mixed message, to say the least. I do, however, have to respect this tape for its honesty, organization, clear dramatizations, excellent direction and videography, and sparkling production. There are tips on training your dog, charging a blind, forcing the flush, and crushing a crippled bird's heart; as well as advice on the best times of the year for hunting, the optimum preserves, positioning a group, and the best weapons. Lots of good, straight-forward information, if you understand the sport of matching wits with gamebirds when you've got a rifle. Highly recommended for larger collections. Two other tapes by Huggler are also available: Grouse Hunting With Tom Huggler and Walleye Tactics With Tom Huggler. Aud: H, C, P. (E. Druda)
