Sisters Mary Lehman and Lynda Miller are the people behind this well-intentioned but flawed approach to informing sports widows of either sex-what they're missing. 1n the best of the bunch, Basketball, ex-pro Stu Lantz appears to work from a well-written script as he guides a group of women through the rules and regulations of basketball. Actual game footage is used to illustrate points throughout, and onscreen pointers and circles direct viewer's attention to the relevant action. In the other two programs, the "pros" appear to be ad-libbing to a great extent-which is not too bad with the relatively smooth presentation of ex-baseball star Jay Johnstone; but is disastrous in the unpolished delivery of Rams linebacker Carl Ekern. Unlike the basketball tape, the action footage used in the baseball and football programs is often used more than once for dissimilar situations. The football program has the additional problem of being badly arranged, so that viewers learn early on the exact inflation weight of a football and the precise dimensions of the field, but aren't told the object of the game or the scoring possibilities until the end of the tape-and then are shown a "safety", but not told that it's worth two points or results in a free kick for the scoring team. Lehman and Miller are on-camera only at the beginning and end of each tape-but they seem to have a better handle on both the type of information necessary and the way to deliver it, then do any of the pros. The basketball tape is recommended; the other two titles are not. (Available from: Pink Side of Sports, P.O. Box 3252, Huntington Beach, CA 92605.)
