Seven time national champion Rich Maier is the host and instructor for this guide to the principles of platform tennis. Also known as paddle tennis, the game is kind of like a cross between tennis and racquetball. A shorter racket is used, players play on a court 1/4th the size of a regulation tennis court, and balls are played off the surrounding screen. Using a combination of live demonstration with three other players, and filmed footage from the Fox Meadows National Championship, Maier coaches viewers in the proper racket grips, forehand and backhand shots, footwork, and player and team strategies. Sections of instruction are usually accompanied by competition footage run in slow-motion with stroke-by-stroke commentary. This is a good overview of a stimulating game which relies more on strategy than on driving power. Recommended. (Available from: R. J. Reilly Co., Field's Lane, RD # 8, Brewster, NY 10509.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
