Originally created as a diversionary game for soldiers who were posted at the Great Wall in China, the game of Mah Jongg, which resembles a cross between bridge and rummy, is currently played by many ages and nationalities all over the world. Using the "three-level system," the filmmakers try to take a graded approach to teaching the game of Mah Jongg, with Level 1 aimed at beginners and Level 3 representing the most challenging play. After a brief historical introduction, narrator Matilda Wong introduces viewers to the playing pieces and the basic concepts involved in Mah Jongg. Viewers see the three sets (numeric, alpha, and flowers) which the 144 tiles fall into, and learn what constitutes "sets" and "runs." This is followed by demonstrations of play at the three levels, and the introduction of common terms used in the game (such as "seung," "pone," "gong," and "sic"). There is a lot of information given, as fairly complex strategies for winning hands are wheeled out one after another. And therein lies the problem. Although purportedly for beginners, anyone completely unfamiliar with Mah Jongg would likely to be a) confused by the presentation, and b) discouraged from pursuing the game. On the other hand, veteran players are likely to glean invaluable tips from the program. An optional purchase.
