Population geography—the study of humanity's geographic characteristics on a global scale—may seem, on the surface, to consist of a lot of dull graphs and projections, but these numbers reveal the wide web of connections linking real people. With 6 billion human beings living in the world today—and the possibility of 9 billion by 2050—it is imperative that we understand how to interpret present data in order to solve future problems. Viewers will learn vocabulary terms such as “cohort,” “demographics,” and “exponential growth,” and be introduced to the Demographic Transition Model (a tool experts use to pinpoint historic change) as they learn about key factors such as birth and death rates, and the relevance of the cultural and societal status of women in various countries. Women's healthcare and family planning are key issues at present: better education and access to services will go a long way toward addressing many problems related to exceedingly high birth rates in developing countries. But whether we think in terms of a small community or a megacity, Population Geography reminds us of the importance of individual responsibility in helping to shape the well-being of those around us.
