Artist James Kirk is the instructor for these instructional programs which introduce viewers to watercolor painting. In the first program, Kirk demonstrates the techniques he's used and taught, such as non-representational drawing, mirror drawing, glass drawing, etc. Following the basics of drawing, Kirk demonstrates methods for stretching paper, and discusses the selection of paints and brushes, before moving on to a portrait of a model, in which he shows viewers how to paint wet-into-wet, controlled and uncontrolled. The second program goes beyond the basics to talk about various design elements, such as contrasting light and dark, ways to eliminate lines from your painting, etc. Kirk is a good instructor, though a bit dogmatic in his approach, and rather adolescent in his humor ("This is how I taught Matisse to do it.", etc.) Recommended for libraries with large arts and crafts collections.

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
