Michael Franti—composer/singer (with a funk-rap world-music vibe), filmmaker, vegetarian, and activist for social justice—joins teachers David Life and Sharon Gannon (co-founders of Jivamukti, a style of yoga representing “spiritual activism”) in this wonderfully synergetic program that encourages viewers to “be the peace you want to see in the world.” Aiming to extend the principles of yoga's mind/body connection into all aspects of daily life, the three instructors collaborate for this dynamic workout that combines traditional yoga poses (sun salutation, warrior, cobra, sphinx, and floor poses, including full head and hand stands) with the inspiration of “seva”—a Sanskrit word implying a connection to the world. Backed by lovely camerawork and Franti's excellent soundtrack, Power to the Peaceful Yoga brings the spirituality of yoga to a refreshing new level of consciousness and commitment. DVD extras include two music performance videos by Franti, an on-camera discussion featuring the three principals, and a freestyle yoga demo. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
