Subtitled “A Complete Course for the Beginner,” Professor Louie's Rock & Blues Accordion not only reveals the mysteries of the accordion (what are all those tiny buttons on the side for anyway?) but also provides some solid instruction for rock and blues styles. Aaron “Professor Louie” Hurwitz (who played with The Band) spends a great deal of time explaining nearly every aspect of the accordion, including how to inspect a prospective purchase, the major differences between accordion types, and what each moving part does (including bass buttons, tone/drawbar keys, bellows, reeds, etc.). Hurwitz also shows students various ways to hold the beast, before proceeding with some of the basic moves, such as connecting chord changes through common notes (simulating the effect of a sustain pedal), emulating guitar licks, and “wobbles” (alternating quickly between two notes). Culminating with a rousing version of “Shake Your Money Maker” backed with a full band track, this fine music instructional DVD is highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (C. Block)
