Wally "Famous" Amos, winner of a Barbara Bush Literacy Award, introduces this low-key guide for parents to help instill a love of reading in their children. Linda Crosswhite, Director of Chapter 1, shares 6 "how-to" secrets with parents, such as being a role model, how to select books, sharing books, and extending the reading experience (visiting the library, watching related videos, listening to audiobooks, etc.). While a lot of the material will seem self-evident to many viewers, those parents for whom reading is not a significant activity will benefit from the tips offered here. In addition to Crosswhite's instruction, the program features a fair amount of scenes showing parents and children reading together. The production qualities don't hold a candle to ALA Video's Read Aloud Now! (reviewed in our October, 1991 issue), and the occasionally sloppy sound editing is somewhat bothersome, but there's much more information here than in the ALA tape. Recommended, with reservations. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
