"Knock off that roughhousing, someone's gonna get hurt!" I'm sure many of us remember these words from our childhood. In our new age, the concept of roughhousing has fallen out of favor even more. Roughhousing will perhaps serve as a reminder of what we've known all along and just forgotten ...namely, that healthy competition in a semistructured environment with rules, aids rather than hinders the normal development of children. Roughhousing is presented by child care export Rick Porter who has taken on the job of re-educating parents in the semi-obvious. Porter covers definitions; guidelines for infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers; and the importance of rules and supervision. To give weight to Porter's arguments, California State University's Dr. Kevin MacDonald offers a few comments designed to comfort parents who might be leery of this brand new (actually age old) concept. Our only real quibble with the tape is the totally pointless and illegal use of Rod Stewart's song "Forever Young" at the end of the program (these people didn't even bother to steal a decent song). Illegal use of music is a common attribute of independent special-interest videos and it is wrong, wrong, wrong. Period. Recommended, with reservations. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
