Designed for Catholic laity discussion groups looking to further develop their spiritual lives, this series of six half-hour presentations by Franciscan Friar Albert Haase focuses on the subject of discernment—i.e., learning to recognize and embrace God's plan for each of us. Adopting a structure similar to that of Haase's earlier efforts—Keeping the Fire Alive: Navigating Challenges in the Spiritual Life (VL Online-11/14) and Come Follow Me: Six Responses to the Invitation of Jesus (VL Online-8/15)—the emphasis here is on Haase's own experience, although he occasionally illustrates points by making references to people he has advised. The first four sessions (“God's Dream of the Kingdom,” “Ten Attitudes for Discernment,” “Listening: The Heart of Discernment,” and “A Discerning Lifestyle”) concentrate on general principles, while the final two (“Discerning the Designs of the Devil” and “Wrestling with God”) deal with recognizing that some options might represent temptations, and that “wrestling with God” in the Scriptural sense (i.e., debating whether we should make a change that God seems to be asking of us) can itself result in a positive spiritual impact. By using himself as an example, Haase is able to connect with his listeners in a personal way. A simply-made lecture series (with a few graphics inserted), this will serve as a solid discussion starter for Catholic lay groups. Recommended. Aud: P. (F. Swietek)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
