Novelist Mark Helprin observed: "A horse is a beautiful animal, but it is perhaps most remarkable because it moves as if it always hears music." For classical minded people, this video reminds viewers that for centuries the favored way of training horses was by leading them in hand, as opposed to riding them, until the horse learned the proper commands. While few today consider in-hand work necessary, this tape is for enthusiasts who train their own horses or for professional trainers who wish to include haute ecole methods in their work. Ably demonstrated by Richard Hinrichs using various European breeds (Lippizaners, Andalusians, Hanoverians and Freisians), the program features techniques for teaching the shoulder-in and half-pass, piaffe, Spanish walk, and airs above the ground. While the demanding and elegant results might not appeal to the people in the local Western saddle club, it will be of interest to those who participate in dressage events. Not for beginners, this challenging program is aimed at experienced owners/trainers and horses. Highly recommended for appropriate collections. Aud: P. (R. Reagan)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
