Sea kayaking originated some 6,000 years ago for use in hunting and while it has evolved into a recreational activity, little else has changed. A sport that can be enjoyed in calm waters or turbulent seas, it is considered a dangerous but not a high risk activity when undertaken in a responsible way. In this program certified instructors and award winning athletes discuss boats, clothing and equipment, as well as demonstrate a variety of techniques: launching the craft, various strokes, and emergency exiting and rescue. The program concludes with a discussion of navigation details, charts, weather radio, rules of the (water) road and other safety issues. The video features a good mix of excellent close up shots for instructional details and action shots for excitement, and safety and common sense are stressed throughout. Of course, in mastering a sport, there is no substitute for personal instruction, experience and common sense, so this program should be considered as a supplement to live instruction. Highly recommended not only for sports enthusiasts but for cautious couch kayakers looking for a thrill. Aud: P. (J. Reed)
