Hosted by Peggy Flores, this instructional title is less about how to draw a self-portrait, and more about the techniques for using self-portraits in several creative art projects. The first segment is a quick overview of how to draw a picture of yourself using either a mirror or a photo, looking at shape, placement of features, and proportion. After shading and detailing are added, traced copies of the portrait are made, which are then used as the basis for explorations of different media, including a “fractured watercolor” (using a wet-on-wet technique), and contouring projects using patterns, collage, color blocks, and digital manipulation. All demos are shown step-by-step, with plenty of student work offered as examples. Keep in mind that the emphasis here is not on realistic reproductions of the face, but rather on creativity and practicing various techniques. Recommended. Aud: I, J, H, P. (E. Gieschen)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
