Even though I'm only (Lord, only?) 44 years old, I often feel that I could benefit from a "stretching for seniors" type exercise tape. The emphasis on safety, the generally slow pace (especially between repetitions), and the level of difficulty appeal more and more to me as I leave my Denise Austin/Richard Simmons/Jane Fonda days behind. Capably hosted by personal trainer Diane Scott, this tape would probably fit nicely into my "pre-golden-years" fitness goal. It starts with a discussion of equipment (small dumbbells, leg weights, and a chair) and clothing, before taking viewers through a warm-up, strength-training for both upper and lower body, and cool-down. The emphasis is on maintaining and improving strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility, and the individual exercises are easy to follow. Though the production values are not stellar (inconsistent lighting, a dog that inexplicably hangs around Ms. Scott's chair, and a man who slowly withdraws a handkerchief from his pocket and blows while the other exercisers are stretching below the waist), and the elderly participants are extremely, uh, calm (well, okay, they're actually downright grim), this video is nonetheless favorably recommended for libraries lacking similar fare. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
