“Oh gag. Not another teen sex movie. I am like so sick of these…all they do is like lecture.” So said my 16-year-old…initially…until I cued up the first tape and she sat down and watched the entire series with me. InJoy has done a terrific job with Sex Smart for Teens, a three-volume series comprised of 2-to-12 minute standalone segments that feature candid comments from teens on a variety of topics, backed by great music, visuals, and editing, and hosted by a hip comedienne instead of some strange 40-year-old in support hose and nurse shoes. Volume 1 covers abstinence (presenting it as an option), explores why teens choose to wait, and encourages viewers to make an educated non-pressured decision they can be comfortable with, while also suggesting strategies to combat peer pressure, date rape, and media influences. Volume 2 explodes birth control myths, presenting honest facts about various birth control options, without encouraging sexual activity. Volume 3 discusses STIs (sexually-transmitted infections), including methods of transmission, symptoms, treatments, and what to do if you suspect you have an STI. My personal favorite out of the dozen or so teenage sexuality guidance titles I've reviewed, this is highly recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
