A realistic guidance program designed to help kids learn from their peers about how to respond to sexual abuse and inappropriate behaviors, Sexual Abuse: It's Not Your Fault features Emily, a personable young girl who shares stories of “confusing, scary, and hurtful things” that happened to her and her friends. The dramatized scenarios are simple and fairly well acted without being unnecessarily disturbing. Hannah is unwillingly photographed by some boys in her class as a prank; Byron's well-liked soccer coach touches him inappropriately; and Emily herself is subjected to abuse at the hands of her older stepbrother. Each situation is followed by critical-thinking questions, and all stories conclude with a satisfactory resolution once a trusted adult is told. Myths such as “that's how guys show they like you” or “this is all your fault” are debunked, and counseling is presented in a positive light. While the program presents no situations involving strangers, the fact is that the perpetrator is known to the child in more than 90 percent of child sexual abuse instances. A teacher's guide is included. Part of the Guidance Systems series, other titles—with varying target audiences—include Your Body: Your Health and Drugs, Bullying: There's Always a Way Out, Sexting: Sex Plus Text Equals Trouble, and Sex Facts: Teens and STDs. Highly recommended. Aud: E, I, P. (E. Gieschen)
