Since the late 1980s, lead has been removed from paints and other materials, but houses built before that time need to be checked for this invisible hazard that is responsible for a large number of illnesses in children. Rather than throwing alarming statistics at viewers and creating an unnecessary panic, the producers of this program present their information in a solid manner. Using a fictitious example, the video shows what happens when a couple is interested in purchasing an older house built prior to the government regulations against lead-based paint, and the sellers are faced with areas of compliance they never knew existed. During the course of this little drama, such questions as "Should you always test for the presence of lead in older homes?" and "What are the most effective ways of testing?" are covered in detail. Those without Lead Poisoning: A Parent's Guide to Prevention (VL-3/97) will want to consider adding this one. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
