Many people know Catherine Hickland as the beautiful but somewhat manipulative Lindsay Rappaport on the soap opera One Life to Live: most probably don't realize that Hickland is also an experienced makeup artist who writes a beauty advice column for Soap Opera Digest and has her own makeup company, Cat Cosmetics. In Simply Gorgeous, Hickland demonstrates makeup application tricks and shares tips on how to save money with the proper equipment. Viewers will learn how to apply eyeliner correctly, cover up blemishes, and create both daytime and nighttime looks. I especially liked how Hickland stepped up to the camera at the beginning without a bit of makeup on her face, looking…just like the rest of us (an encouraging start). After detailed makeup application on one model, we are shown these same techniques applied to models from diverse ethnic backgrounds, with great results each time. Hickland then visits a local mall, where she tests out her routine on passing shoppers to show just how quickly one can achieve a fresh new face. While some may be attracted to this program because Hickland is a TV star, Simply Gorgeous is a solid instructional tape all on its own. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Asala)
