Sleep is essential to human beings, and no one knows that better than the parents of sleepless babies. Two opposing methods of getting baby to sleep are presented here: sleep training (in which the baby self-soothes back to sleep) or co-sleeping (letting the baby sleep in the parents' bed or in their room). While the program does a good job of keeping an even-handed tone in narration, the dangers of "the family bed" are glossed over in both interviews and in the actual video footage. Despite the warning that babies in "the family bed" should not be surrounded by pillows, blankets, comforters, or stuffed animals, and that they should always sleep on their backs, the babies shown here are virtually obscured by stuff, and sleep on their sides. Otherwise, this well-made video includes several pediatricians and child sleep experts giving their advice to multi-racial parent couples. Unfortunately, the pricing will put this out of the range of most libraries (you could buy a large, well-balanced print collection covering both sides of the two issues for the price of this one thirty-minute tape). Recommended for well-funded hospital libraries. Aud: C, P. (R. Reagan)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
