In this excellent overview of key “soft skills”—i.e., elements not related to formal job requirements—viewers will learn that a good attitude and strong work ethic can be more important to employers than education or know-how. Narrated by regional Emmy Award–winning news anchor and reporter Lori Wilson, the program is divided into five sections: “Making a Professional Impression,” “Acting with Integrity,” “Communicating Effectively,” “Working as Part of a Team,” and “Pushing Yourself to Succeed.” Commentary from hiring managers is interwoven with credible dramatic vignettes that re-create familiar situations relating to questions such as: Are you reliable? Do you come to work on time? Do you dress appropriately? And are you accountable for your actions? Some of the sketches are funny, but others touch on serious matters. For example, in one segment a construction worker who is asked by a colleague about a questionable practice responds that it was necessary to “improvise” on the quality of materials in order to get the job done on time—and save the company a few bucks in the process. Of course, this method of cutting corners is a no-no, and another way is suggested for the co-worker to address the issue more effectively. Serving up critical-thinking questions related to common scenarios, the program also features a downloadable instructor's guide with quizzes and other activities.
